Design and Communications Contractor
About the Role
We are looking for a part-time contractor to bring creativity, organization, and consistency to Open Lunar’s digital presence. This role blends design, publishing, and light content support to keep our communications clear, polished, and aligned with our brand. It’s a flexible position ideal for someone with strong design skills who enjoys working across multiple platforms and contributing to a mission-driven team. This role reports to the Director of Operations but will collaborate with the broader team as well.
Position Structure & Compensation
Hourly rate: $30–$50/hour depending on experience
Hours per Month: 20–25 hours/month
Invoicing: Contractor will send an invoice each month for the number of hours worked
Location: This is a remote position that can be based anywhere in the world. While there isn’t a preferred time zone, the role does require a few touchpoints throughout each week.
Role & Responsibilities
Graphics & Design
Create graphics for social media posts using Open Lunar templates and brand guidelines.
Design graphics for collateral outside of social media in Canva (website images, printed materials, merchandise, event materials).
Content Management & Publishing
Upload newsletter content to Flodesk, make final edits, and schedule for publishing.
Load social media posts into Hootsuite and linktree for scheduled release in addition to scheduling occasional timely posts.
Upload blogs and make website updates in Squarespace.
Proofreading & Formatting
Conduct basic proofreading, including running all materials through grammar-check tools set to UK English.
Format research publications according to provided templates and style standards.
There is potential for this role to draft short-form content for social media posts
Who should apply?
Must haves
Strong design skills, with proven ability to create professional, brand-aligned graphics, and proficiency with Canva.
Experience updating and maintaining websites, and familiarity with social media scheduling platforms.
Available to check in several times a week to ensure smooth collaboration and responsiveness.
Excellent and proactive communicator, can commit to using Slack, Asana, and Google Docs regularly to track tasks, confirm details, and meet deadlines.
Adapt easily to Open Lunar’s established visual style and brand guidelines.
Strong proofreading skills including running materials through Grammarly or equivalent, set to UK English.
Highly organized, tracking monthly deadlines and proactively reaching out about upcoming due dates or something that you are waiting on.
Nice to haves
Proficiency with Hootsuite, Squarespace, Flodesk, and Asana.
Space industry experience.
Strong writing ability and interest in content creation.
Experience drafting engaging social media copy (captions, posts, headlines) aligned with organizational voice.

Do I need professional design/communications experience to apply?
Having served in a professional role is preferred, but we are also open to design/comms student applications.
What should I submit as a portfolio?
A link to your portfolio website or even a simple PDF will suffice. We are looking for examples of your work such as sample social media graphics, webpages you designed, or newsletters that you have put together.
How many rounds are there in the application process?
Three rounds:
Initial review of applications
Interview with Director of Operations
Final interview with Director of Operations and one other Open Lunar team member
