Introducing the Lunar Ledger Database: Empowering open data-sharing for lunar missions

AUTHOR: CHRISTINE TIBALLI, OPEN LUNAR FELLOW AND LUNAR LEDGER LEAD

After three years of rigorous research, community consultation, and technical development, the Open Lunar Foundation is proud to announce the official launch and rebranding of our flagship registry project as the Lunar Ledger: Global Lunar Database of Objects and Activities.

More than just a name change, the Lunar Ledger represents our commitment to providing a trusted, neutral platform that empowers the next wave of lunar exploration and development. Built through sustained collaboration with over 200 global stakeholders, from commercial operators and space agencies to academic and civil society leaders, the Lunar Ledger operationalises space transparency, enabling informed, confident, and cooperative lunar missions.

The coming years promise an unprecedented surge of activity on the Moon, especially at high-priority sites like the Peaks of Eternal Light. As mission frequency increases, so does the need for coordination, transparency, and trust. The Lunar Ledger provides a central, open-access database where operators can register and share key details about their missions. This collective visibility helps reduce risks, avoid interference, and make lunar operations safer and more predictable for all.

The Lunar Ledger website is now live at www.lunarledger.space, where you can explore our platform, learn more about our governance model, and see how collaborative information sharing can directly support mission planning and the long-term sustainability of the lunar environment.

We’re fortunate to be guided by an extraordinary group of advisors, respected voices from government, industry, and research around the world. Their practical experience, policy insight, and operational know-how ensure the platform reflects real needs across the entire lunar ecosystem. Their ongoing input is instrumental as we continue shaping the Lunar Ledger into a truly global resource for everyone working on and around the Moon.

What’s next?

With the core platform build nearing completion, we are preparing to onboard our first group of Beta Users: key commercial and institutional partners who will help shape the next chapter of Lunar Ledger’s evolution. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing more about our early partnerships and ways for the global lunar community to participate.

Together, we’re building the foundational infrastructure for a peaceful, cooperative, and thriving future on the Moon.
